The name of the town comes from Furt (ford) and Fähre (ferry) and was first mentioned as Tuliphordium
on the teutonic map of Ptolemäus around 150 A.D. In the year 810 the colony is named Ferdi in Saxonia.
It is said that in the year 782 during the christianization (772-804) by Karl der Große over 4,500
Saxons had been executed. This went down in history as the "Verdener Blutbad" (massacre of Verden).

After the Thirty Years' War the bishopric Verden and the archbishopric Bremen belonged as dukedoms to Sweden
and 1719 to Hanover. During the Napoleonic Wars Verden belonged to Prussia, to the Kingdom of Westphalia (1810),
to the Empire of France (1811-1813) and since 1866 again to Prussia. Since the reformation of the todays Federal
Republic in the year 1946 Verden belongs to the county Lower Saxony.

As Verden has a clerical past as a bishopric many sacred buildings and remainders of the Middle Ages in the
old part of the town make up a pictorial townscape.
The Johannis church, the townhall, the Scharfrichterhaus (building of the executioner),
the pedestrian precinct, the fischer district (old part), the Domherrenhaus (todays Historical Museum),
the Horse Museum, the Andreas- and Josef church and of course the cathedral are some of the great sights
of Verden.

Important industrial companies are the EFFEM (production of feeding stuff for familiar pets),
Focke & Co. (production of machines for the tabacco industry), Block (electronics company) and
the VEMAG (production of machines and units for the food industry).
Beside that you can find many small companies so that you can buy almost everything directly in the old
